Geraniums are the stars of any summer decoration. With their vibrant colours and varied flower shapes, they provide a summer feel and pure joie de vivre. Used as cut flowers or arranged in pots, they add a special touch to any table – be it a family celebration, a cosy garden party or a relaxed coffee morning. The decoration experts at Pelargonium for Europe (PfE) have come up with ideas for table decorations that show off geraniums to perfection and promise a feast for all the senses.
A floral frenzy: floating platter party displays
Instead of serving food on plates, this homemade floral table setting features party hors d’oeuvres served on floating platters. The boards are held in place by empty wine bottles. Simply make two or three holes in the platters, depending on their size, and place them over the cleaned bottles. Add colourful cut geraniums, sea holly (Eryngium planum) and ornamental grasses to water-filled bottles to complete this summer table arrangement!
Tip: Cutting off individual flower stems doesn’t bother geraniums. On the contrary, it encourages them to produce more blooms.

Perfectly arranged: colourful geraniums in pastel planters
Flowers are a must for a summer garden party. This table setting requires no creative talent, just colourful geraniums and pastel planters. Simply arrange the pots of geraniums in the centre of the table. Your colourful summer table is ready!

Project: Cut geranium candle lanterns
Left: This floral lantern is a charming feature and quick to make. Cut geraniums are held in place around a glass vessel, containing a candle, with an elastic band. A matching ribbon covers the elastic and rounds off this summer table arrangement. To keep the geraniums looking good for longer, place the lantern on a saucer of water so the stems are submerged.
Tip: Use scented geranium leaves to replace the cut blooms – and create a magical, homemade scented candle in no time!
Right: This floral centrepiece is a decorative highlight on any table. It takes a little time and skill to make, but this homemade arrangement can be used all year round with different flowers.
Here’s how: Drill holes around the edge of a round wooden disc and insert test tubes.
Fill these with water and add your choice of cut geraniums and grasses. Place a glass vessel with a candle in the centre of the disc. A slightly smaller piece of wood glued under the disc creates a floating effect and adds elegance to the piece.

Branch flower holders
These flower holders have a homemade feel and are ready-made. Place test tubes between the sections of wood to hold cut geraniums and ornamental grasses. With a little know-how, you can always make these natural, rustic pieces yourself. It’s definitely cheaper and more sustainable.
