Hidden seating areas in the garden are perfect for relaxing or entertaining. Creative ideas and hardy, low-maintenance geraniums create blooming, colourful havens from spring to autumn. The experts at Pelargonium for Europe (PfE) show you some inspiring examples of garden retreats featuring these colourful classics.
A twist on the natural wooden container garden
This unique, naturalistic garden idea shows that outdoor spaces can be beautifully designed without expensive garden furniture and planters. Geraniums, olive trees and eucalyptus are planted together in old wooden crates. This creates Mediterranean ‘mini-gardens’ that can be placed anywhere. The homemade rustic side table is constructed from logs of the same length but different thicknesses, placed in a circle and tied with thick rope.

Tip: Place these mini gardens in a sunny spot, as geraniums need plenty of light to bloom.
Right:
On warm summer evenings, a fire pit is the perfect place to gather with friends and family. Low-maintenance geraniums in decorative baskets create a feel-good atmosphere with their lush blooms and vibrant colours. Natural solid wood blocks provide seating.

A favourite fairytale spot with soft lighting
This magical place with a party atmosphere is perfect for lazy summer evenings in the garden.
Among blooming geraniums and lots of greenery, a garden bench is perfect for daydreaming and chatting. Candles in buckets of sand provide a soft glow.

Lanterns, fairy lights and macramé geranium holders hanging from the branches of a tree create a magical atmosphere.
Tip: Geraniums are summer plants. They need plenty of sunlight to bloom, so they’re only suitable as tree decorations temporarily.

Romantic garden retreat with tent and hammock
A hammock and a homemade tent, comfortably furnished with cushions and blankets, transform this blooming garden into a peaceful retreat where you can take a relaxing break from everyday life. Lush, colourful geraniums add a summery feel and bright accents.

A lovingly prepared picnic of fresh fruit and cakes will keep you well fed. These treats are served on a homemade floating table. Simply drill four holes in a rectangular plank of wood and attach it to a straight branch in the tree with ropes. Hanging lanterns and small glass vases filled with geraniums or cutlery create a lovely ambience around this unusual handmade garden table.
